No Deer, but Something Great for Sure

WOAH! Summer went by way too fast. My adventure list grows by the day, but still so many adventures to complete. Right now, cold weather looms over the Northeast like a dark cloud waiting to strike, yet I am excited!

Ray and I took a trip up to my parent's house in Vermont for Labor Day weekend and the excursions got me all the more excited for the inclement weather to come.

Why might I be excited to freeze my ass off - you may wonder. My answer to that includes a combination of snowboarding, hiking, sledding, fuzzy socks, blankets, movie days, way too much drinking and a shit ton of winter fun. THAT'S WHAT!

Winter stories and adventures are near.

Anyway, back to our Labor Day weekend trip. Ray and I spent a romantic 4 day weekend in Vermont accompanied by my golden doodle, Apollo. (He's amaze-ballz, just in case you didn't know.)

We arrived on Thursday night around 7:30 pm. The drive from Yardley, PA took us around 5 and 1/2 hours. Not too bad, zero traffic.

On Friday, began our escapades. Our first excursion was a hike along the Appalachian trail which led to what is called Deer Leap Overlook. Ray and I have passed this mountainous overlook many times on our way to ski mountains, admiring its features. On Friday, we finally got a look at it from a first person perspective.

We entered the Appalachian trail at an opening near the Inn at Long Trail near Pico Mountain Ski Resort. The hike was about 4 miles in total, to the overlook and back. The trail itself was magnificently rocky and moderately difficult. It was less like a rock climb, and more like a rock walk. As you hike the trail, you are prompted to dodge large boulders and cross flat rock bridges. If Apollo could do it, you could too! (He's 11 years young FYI).

When we finally reached the point of overlook, Visa Point, my smile grew from ear-to-ear. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL! From one large boulder on the side of a cliff you get a prime view of Vermont down below and an amazing mountain range. Although the gale-force winds were cold as ice, the overlook was definitely bucket-list worthy.

If you are a hammocker like Ray and I are, Visa Point offers some sweet spots to tie up! Beside the overlook, there's an opportunity to retreat within the trees along side a giant boulder. You can knot up as high up as you like and enjoy an escape from reality.

We didn't see any deer leaping, but we saw something great for sure. I would rate this hike a 8.5/10! It was a excellent day-getaway. Dog-friendly, clear trail, perfect distance, just GREAT!

Exact trail entrance location: 709 US-4, Killington, VT 05751
